The Beaver River Structure: A Cross-Strike Discontinuity of Possible Crustal Dimensions in the Southern Mackenzie Fold Belt, Yukon and Northwest Territories, Canada

ABSTRACT

A significant cross-strike structural discontinuity, the Beaver River Structure, has been recognized near the boundary between the north-central part of the Mackenzie Fold Belt and its southern part, the Liard Plateau. The Beaver River Structure is the northeast continuation of the Beaver Fault toward the confluence of the South Nahanni and Liard rivers and into the Interior Platform. It is oriented sub-parallel with the Liard Line farther south. Cumulative Laramide-aged dextral movement of 10 to 20 kilometres is inferred to have occurred along the Beaver River Structure. Small dextral offsets occur along the Beaver Fault, a possible surface manifestation of the Beaver River Structure and large, dominantly north-south oriented Laramide-aged folds and faults, such as the Kotaneelee and Liard synclines and the Nahanni Thrust Fault appear to have been locally rotated in a manner consistent with dextral strike-slip of at least 10 to 20 kilometres.

The absence of Permian and Triassic strata in the Mackenzie Fold Belt north of the Beaver River Structure may indicate that uplift and erosion occurred north of the Beaver River Structure during the Early Cretaceous Columbian Orogeny. It is likely that the Beaver River Structure is an ancient, possibly Precambrian, structure that has been reactivated several times throughout Phanerozoic time.

Une discontinuite structurale significative croisant la direction structurale, la Structure de Beaver River, a ete reconnue pres de la frontiere entre la partie centre-nord de la chaine de plissement de Mackenzie et sa partie sud, le plateau de Liard. La Structure de Beaver River est la continuation nord-est de la faille Beaver, vers la confluence des rivieres Nahanni Sud et Liard et dans la Plate-forme de l'Interieur. Elle est orientee sub-parallelement a la Ligne Liard situee plus au sud. Le mouvement dextre cumulatif d'age Laramide de 10 a 20 km est infere s'etre produit le long de la Structure de Beaver River. De petits rejets dextres se presentent le long de la faille de Beaver, une manifestation possible Previous HitenTop surface de la Structure de Beaver River et de grands plis et failles d'age Laramide, d'orientations a dominante nord-sud, comme les synclinaux de Kotaneelee et de Liard et la faille de chevauchement de Nahanni semblent avoir pivote localement d'une facon conforme a un decrochement dextre d'au moins 10 a 20 kilometres.

L'absence de strates du Permien et du Trias dans la chaine de chevauchement de Mackenzie au nord de la Structure de Beaver River indique peut-etre que du soulevement et de l'erosion se sont produits au nord de la Structure de Beaver River pendant l'orogenese du Colombien. Il est probable que la Structure de Beaver River est une ancienne structure, possible du Precambrien, qui a ete reactivee plusieurs fois tout au long de la periode Phanerozoique.
