Abrupt Changes in Structural Style and Associated Stratigraphic Thickness Across Cross-Strike Lineaments, Rocky Mountain Foothills, Northeastern British Columbia

ABSTRACT

Abrupt changes in structural style across cross-strike valleys have been mapped in the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia. These changes, which can be characterized as differing degrees of structural disharmony, appear to correspond with changes in thickness of the mechanically weak Triassic Toad-Grayling Formation. The pattern of inferred thickness changes is interpreted to reflect a pre-contractional configuration of small-offset normal faults, linked by minor, cross-strike, oblique-slip faults. Subsequent Laramide contractional deformation resulted in a combination of "thin-skinned" detachment folding and relatively "thick-skinned" reactivation of the pre-existing normal faults (perhaps involving thick Proterozoic units). The cross-strike fault zones, caught up within the contractional structures, are interpreted to have localized prominent, linear drainage patterns that are seen throughout the general area. The inferred pre-existing normal faults and associated cross-strike transfer faults may have influenced thickness and/or facies distributions of Carboniferous through Triassic rocks, many of which are targets of active hydrocarbon exploration.

RESUME

Des changements abrupts dans le style structural de part et d'autre de vallees transversales au grain structural ont ete cartographies dans le Piemont du nord-est de la Colombie-Britannique. Ces changements, qui peuvent etre caracterises comme le reflet de differents degres de dysharmonie structurale, semblent correspondre a des changements en epaisseur de la Formation de Toad-Grayling du Trias, qui est mecaniquement faible. Le patron infere de changements d'epaisseur est interprete comme refletant une configuration pre-contractionnelle de failles normales a faible rejet, liees par des failles a rejet oblique transversales et mineures. La deformation contractionnelle subsequente de Laramide a resulte en une combinaison de plissement de decollement 'epidermique' et une reactivation 'de peau epaisse' de failles normales preexistantes (qui implique possiblement des unites epaisses du Proterozoique). Les zones de failles transversales, prises a l'interieur des structures de contraction, sont interpretees comme ayant influence la localisation de patrons de drainage proeminents et lineaires qui sont observes a l'interieur de la grande region. Les failles normales preexistantes inferees et les failles transversales de transfert associees ont possiblement influence l'epaisseur et/ou la distribution des facies des roches du Carbonifere jusqu'au Trias, dont plusieurs sont des cibles d'exploration active pour les hydrocarbures.
