The Jan Mayen Ridge

G. Leonard Johnson

Abstract

The northeastern boundary of the Icelandic Plateau is marked by a north-south striking, flat-topped, ridge — the Jan Mayen Ridge. The ridge extends from the volcanic island of Jan Mayen to about 68°30′N. Seismic reflection data across the ridge show a thin (100-300 m) section of sediments overlying truncated eastward dipping strata. The western side of the ridge is apparently formed by a strucutral high represented by acoustic basement. It is generally accepted that the ridge may be a continental fragment rifted away from the Greenland continental margin as a result of a shift in the Norwegian Sea spreading axis. Rock samples obtained by dredging from where the ridge is cut on its northern end by the Jan Mayen Fracture zone support a Mid-Tertiary age for the Jan Mayen Ridge.
