The Opening of the Bay of Biscay

C. A. Williams

Abstract

An analysis of the magnetic anomaly profiles in the Bay of Biscay has produced evidence for the existence of an east-west trending former spreading axis in the region. The age of the Biscay seafloor deduced from the identification of magnetic anomalies is Cretaceous, with the major opening probably beginning in the Barremian and terminating approximately 73 m.y. ago, during the Maastrichtian.
