A Regional Seismic Reflection Profile in the Scotian Basin, Offshore Nova Scotia

Otto R. Friedenreich

Abstract

A recent multichannel seismic regional profile in the Scotian Basin was recorded from the Banquereau Platform down the continental rise and into the oceanic zone. The area underlying the shelf displays the characteristics of an Atlantic passive margin. In the slope and rise areas diapiric material (Argo salt) is revealed within the Jurassic sequence, which was displaced seaward due to sediment loading from the Sable Delta. The Argo salt lies well above the basement and does not seem to be related to rift grabens.
