Devonian Ammonoid zonation and correlations between North America and Europe
Abstract
The ammonoid sequences of Europe and New York State are described with particular reference to recent discoveries. Problems concerning the relation between the standard European zones and their correlation with the type stage successions are discussed. Comparison of the Middle and Upper Devonian ammonoid zones between Europe and N. America show remarkable agreement in faunal succession, but sufficient detailed differences to warrant, for the most part, a separate zonal nomenclature for N. America. The New York State succession shows several typical European genera to be absent or rare. The occurence of some of these in the mid-West, and especially in western Canada and the Arctic, strengthens the view that the main faunal links were not trans-Atlantic, but trans-Arctic, linking via the faunas of Novaya Zemlya and the Urals to the well-known sequences of Poland, Germany, N. Africa and England.
