Devonian of the Adavale Basin, Queensland, Australia

J. J. Tanner

Abstract

The Adavale Group of south-central Queensland includes the Lower Devonian Gumbardo and Gilmore formations, the Middle Devonian Etonvale Formation and the Upper Devonian Buckabie Formation. Occurrence is entirely subsurface in the Adavale Basin, a structural basin beneath the Mesozoic/Permian Great Artesian Basin. Maximum thickness of the group is approximately 17,000 feet. The sequence illustrates marine transgression in Early and Middle Devonian time from the Tasman Geosyncline westward on to a cratonic shelf of deformed and intruded Silurian and older rocks, and regression during Middle and Late Devonian. Carboniferous structural movement and erosion occurred before Late Carboniferous and Permian deposition. Oil exploration has resulted in a dry-gas discovery in the Gilmore Formation and minor oil and gas shows in the Etonvale Formation.
