Abstract

The object of this paper is to give information on studies carried out on Devonian reefs in Poland. The works of Prof. Dr. M. Lecompte, on the classical Devonian reef area in Belgium, have served as a model for this study.

Devonian sediments have been known for a long time in the Holy Cross Mountains, on the Silesian-Kracovian plateau and in the Sudetan region. Intensive geological investigations, recently conducted in Poland, have provided new materials for other regions of the country. The presence of Devonian sediments in the marginal depression of the East-European platform have been noted.

The Lower Devonian is developed as a sandy-shale of “Old Red” facies in which there are no reefs. The Middle and Upper Devonian are developed as calcareous clay and dolomitic sediments in which reefs are found. These latter have been known for a long time in the Holy Cross Mountains. Actually, the presence of reefs has also been noted in the Polish lowlands. Sediments with typical reef-type development are only seen in the Givetian and lower Frasnian. In contrast, in the Middle Frasnian bioherms are dominant. In the younger Devonian sediments no reefs are found.

The result of the studies made up till now indicates that the biostromes were built mainly by stromatoporoids with the help of corals. In the Silesian-Kracovian plateau they are seen, both in outcrop (Siewerz region) and in wells, in Givetian beds. Biostromes of similar construction are found in the Holy Cross Mountains, in contrast, in the Polish lowlands there are others developed which contain many corals.

The bioherms are limited to the zone south of the Holy Cross Mountains and the Silesian-Kracovian plateau.
