A Geological Evaluation of the Judith River Formation (Belly River Formation) in the Pembina Region

G. G. M. Wasser

Abstract

The Campanian Judith River Formation consists of interbedded dark grey shales and light grey sandstones (litharenites). The formation can be subdivided into informal lower, Foremost, and upper, Oldman, units.

The Foremost unit is interpreted as a series of southeasterly prograding delta and nearshore deposits. The unit consists of eight cyclical successions with the sand content increasing progressively in the upper cycles. The base of each cycle is a marine shale, grading upward to a nearshore or mouthbar sandstone. The mouthbar sandstone is occasionally truncated and overlain by distributary channel deposits.

The three uppermost cyclical successions of the Foremost unit interfinger with and are overlain by the Oldman unit. The latter consists of continental deposits, which were formed in southeast flowing, meandering, fluvial systems.
