Abstract
Surface to Subsurface Lithostratigraphic Correlations Within the Upper Devonian Grosmont Formation, Northern Alberta
Abstract
Outcrops of the Upper Devonian (Frasnian) Grosmont Formation have been studied in detail and a total of seven lithofacies have been recognized, based on macro- and microfossils, micrite and terrigenous contents, and depositional textures.
Correlations between subsurface gamma ray log markers and outcrop locations have placed the base of the outcrops approximately 85 metres above the base of the Grosmont Formation.
Correlations between lithofacies recognized at the Peace River outcrops, and lithofacies described in core recovered from a well approximately 115 kilometres southeast of the outcrop area, are successful in the upper two-thirds of the section associated with the Upper Grosmont 1 unit. Lithologies below this unit are completely different and probably represent different environments of deposition with deeper or more restricted water conditions characterizing the outcrop location area.
