Reservoir Heterogeneities in the Nisku Formation in the Stettler, Stettler South and Fenn-Big Valley North Lobe Oil Pools, Alberta

J. A. Dolph

Abstract

The Stettler, Stettler South and Fenn-Big Valley North Lobe Nisku oil pools, located in Townships 36–38, Range 20W4 in southern Alberta were examined. Reservoir heterogeneity was found to be caused by lateral and vertical changes in sedimentary facies and by the diagenetic effects of dolomitization, leaching and draping.

Up to three porous layers are present in the Nisku Formation, each acting as a separate oil-drainage cell. Vertical variation in porosity is controlled by depositional cycles. Lateral variation is controlled by paleotopography generated by the underlying Leduc reef. Complete dolomitization and variable degrees of leaching and brecciation have resulted in moldic, intercrystalline and breccia porosity.
