Importance of Palaeomagnetic data for Devonian Stratigraphy and Palaeogeography in the USSR

A. N. Khramov

Abstract

The large amount of detailed work that has been carried on in the field of palaeomagnetic determinations in the Devonian formations of the USSR renders this system the best known palaeomagnetically.

The results of these investigations confirm the postulation of essential changes in geomagnetic fields during Devonian time. This permits the application of palaeomagnetic criteria to the solution of some problems of stratigraphy of the Devonian System, including the problems of its boundaries.

The sum of palaeomagnetic data on the Devonian of the USSR confirms the hypothesis of a central axial dipole and the validity of identifying mean palaeomagnetic parallels with palaeogeographic ones. These parallels have been set up for all the epochs of the Devonian over the USSR. They aid in the analysis of the latitudinal zonation of the Devonian palaeoclimates, which differs from that of the present.
