Le Devonien de Minorque (Baleares, Espagne): Ses limites et sa place en Mediterranee Occidentale

Robert Bourrouilh

Abstract

Situated approximately in the middle of the western Mediterranean, Minorca is the only island of the Balearic archipelago where the Palaeozoic crops out. Up to now only the Upper Devonian and a part of the Carboniferous have been recorded. In this paper, after describing the structural and stratigraphic setting of Minorca and discussing previous work, the author shows that Silurian, Lower Devonian and Middle Devonian are also present. Then, on the basis of sedimentological studies, details of the stratigraphy of the Lower, Middle and Upper Devonian are given. The limits between the Devonian and Silurian and between the Devonian and Carboniferous are discussed. A diagrammatic section and a correlation table sum up the essentials of the recent additions to knowledge in this part of the Mediterraneon.
