Devonian of the Townsville Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

D. H. Wyatt, J. S. Jell

Abstract

Devonian strata occur in two basins in the Townsville Hinterland — the Broken River Embayment and the Burdekin Basin, both essentially shelf areas on the western margin of the aging Tasman geosyncline. The oldest recognised Devonian occurs in the embayment, where early Palaeozoic flysch sedimentation (Graveyard Greek Formation) continued into the early Emsian when sedimentation ceased, possibly as a result of earth movements when the Dumbano granite (380 my. Siegenian) was intruded. Following a period of slight erosion, deposition recommenced in the late Emsian in the Embayment (Broken River Formation) and in the Givetian in the Burdekin Basin (Fanning River Group). The remainder of the Devonian and through to the Late Tournaisian is characterised in both basins by alternating marine and continental (or very near shore) deposits resulting from transgressions and regressions caused by epeirogenic movements.
