The Department of Energy’s Oil and Gas Environmental Research and Analysis Program: Balancing the Needs of a Growing Economy and a Healthy Environment

Patricia Fry Godley

Abstract

Our nation needs a reliable domestic supply of oil and natural gas. At the same time, protecting the environment is vital to the health and well-being of current and future generations. Environmental regulations have raised the cost of oil and gas exploration and production and have limited access to new resources. Future regulations will likely increase costs further, which in turn could accelerate the decline in U.S. oil production and limit the availability of natural gas, resulting in fewer fobs and tax revenues. The Department of Energy is working with industry and government, using the best information and science available, to find new ways to address our nation’s environmental concerns and maximize the recovery of domestic oil and gas resources by reducing the costs of effective environmental protection.
