Origins of Grosmont Formation Dolomite (Northeast Alberta): Modelling the Results of Geochemical Analysis

P. A. Larson

Abstract

Analysis of the Upper Grosmont 2 dolomite indicates approximately 40°C (104°F) as a reasonable crystallization temperature. This value is consistent with a near-surface origin in sabhka-related environments. A formal geochemical model has been constructed to summarize the essential constraints on this estimate. At deposition (Upper Devonian) the antecedent limestones had a δ18O value of approximately -3.7 (PDB). After recrystallization to -6.5 these limestones were dolomitized to -3.7 by interaction with a mixture of seawater and meteoric fluids. A temperature of 40°C results from assumptions concerning the range of possible δ18O values for this mixture. Baroque dolomite and burial calcite cements are also present but volumetrically unimportant. These cements are interpreted as forming in response to the introduction of new, basinally derived pore fluids.
