ABSTRACT: Supplementary Water Supply for Corpus Christi from Deep Artesian Wells in the Carrizo Sand

ABSTRACT

In order to meet the rapidly increasing demands for water in the Corpus Christi area, a ground-water supply has been developed to supplement the existing surface-water supply from the Nueces River. The well field is located on the Atascosa River, a tributary of the Nueces River, about 50 miles north of Lake Corpus Christi and about 90 miles northwest of the City of Corpus Christi. Water from the wells is discharged into the Atascosa River through which it is transmitted to Lake Corpus Christi. At present the well field consists of four wells drawing from the Carrizo sand with depths ranging from 3,663 to 4,130 feet. The artesian flow from individual wells ranges from 1,250 to 2,900 gallons per minute and totals 11.5 million gallons per day. The average shut-in pressure is about 80 p.s.i. The wells are operated only during periods of low surface-water discharge into Lake Corpus Christi.
