Notes on Washita - Fredericksburg Contact in the East Texas Basin

R. W. Eaten (*), E. J. Reynolds (*)

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of ammonities, recovered in cores from the zone of the Washita-Fredericksburg contact in several wells in the East Texas Basin, offers sufficient data to define a more reliable subsurface contact between these formations.

The presence of the Genus Oxytropidoceras, together with additional supporting fauna, occuring in the limestone stringers commonly placed in the basal Duck Creek, indicates this sequence of limestones is more likely upper Fredericksburg in age or represents a transition zone between Washita and Fredericksburg.

The faunal evidence indicating the necessity of reassignment of these beds is supported by lithologic changes in the limestones and shales. The contact zone is readily determined in well cuttings, as well as by electrical characteristic.
