Abstract: A Method for Evaluating Mud Stream Gases

H. R. Chism

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of natural hydrocarbon gases in the mud stream is the first real evidence that a hydrocarbon bearing zone has been penetrated. This statement has been the theme of mud logging since its beginning. However, the recording of a combustible gas means very little until it can be qualified. Consequently, a comprehensive analysis of the gases is required.

This paper deals with the methods and procedures used in obtaining an analytical get log of the well. A description of special instrumentation developed for this purpose is included along with a full discussion of the most important phase of sample procurement and handling.
