Abstract
The Basal Sediments of the Austin Group and the Stratigraphic Position of the Tuscaloosa Formation of Central Louisiana
James M. Forgotson (2)
ABSTRACT
Basal sediments of the Austin group overlap and lie with angular unconformity upon the truncated surface of older formations. The name Rapides shale is proposed for those beds which are above this unconformity and lie conformably below either the Ector chalk or its stratigraphic equivalent. The Tuscaloosa formation of central Louisiana is correlated with the Lewisville formation of East Texas. The unconformity between the Comanchean Cretaceous and the Gulfian Cretaceous can be and often is above the top of the Maness shale.
