Abstract: Fault Map of South Louisiana

W. E. Wallace, Editor (1)

ABSTRACT

This, the 1962 edition of the Fault Map, was prepared especially for the Transactions. The most recent previous edition was in the Transactions of 1957, Volume VII. This edition contains much new fault material as well as salt contours of all the domes. The salt contours became available in 1960 and 1962 in publications of the New Orleans Geological Society.

We remarked, many years ago, that the number of faults known in South Louisiana is proportional to the number of wells drilled. This still holds true. It seems that they also grown in size, and more large ones appear with persistent regularity. Faults of more than 1,000 feet of displacement are no longer remarkable but are likely to be found almost anywhere.

It will be noted that with each passing year, fewer faults are plotted with rulers and more with flexible curves arcuate patterns becoming more dominant.

Some of the old shallow faults have been removed because of good deeper control, grabens on some structures giving way to larger down-to-the-south fault patterns. Well control is still sparse in the offshore areas but is rapidly accumulating since the Federal Lease Sale of 1962.

The copy in these Transactions is on a scale of 1:500,000 to match the Oil and Gas Map of Louisiana and the forthcoming Geologic Map of Louisiana. In preparing the new map a tracing was made on a scale of 1:250,000. Prints of this large map may he ordered, as can previous publications of the G.C.A.G.S., from Cambe Log Library of Louisiana. Inc., 718 Milam Street, Houston, Texas.
