Abstract
A Stratigraphic Revision within the Jackson Group in South Central Texas
Jerry D. Horne (1)
ABSTRACT
In the spring and fall of 1960 the writer mapped the surface outcrop of some of the upper Jackson beds in southeastern Atascosa County, Texas. During this study it was discovered that the sandstone bed commonly mapped as the Stones Switch Member of the Whitsett Formation did not correlate with the type locality for the Stones Switch as established by Ellisor (1933). The type locality Stones Switch was found to be laterally discontinuous and stratigraphically lower than the sandstone bed mapped as the Stones Switch in Karnes County by Ellisor (1933) and later by Eargle (1959).
A new name, the Lipan Hills sandstone, is applied to the upper sandstone bed in this paper, and a type locality for this member is established. The less continuous and stratigraphically lower Stones Switch sandstone is relegated to the status of a lentil within the Dilworth Member of the McElroy Formation as defined by Eargle (1959).
