Vermilion Block 16 Field -- A Study of Irregular Gas Reservoir Performance Related to Non-Uniform Sand Deposition

W.L. Seal (1), J.A. Gilreath (2)

ABSTRACT

Sands deposited in a deltaic environment may contain numerous non-connected reservoirs in what appears to be a blanket sand. If multiple-reservoir situations are not recognized and appropriate production plans formulated, significant hydrocarbon reserves will be left in untapped reservoirs.

The Vermilion Block 16 Field provides a case history of such a situation. The initial bottom-hole-pressure maps provided the first indication of the existence of multiple reservoirs within apparent blanket sands. The next step was a study utilizing dipmeters and other logs designed to break up each sand into as many stratigraphic units as possible.

This information was combined with performance data and reserves were reassessed. As a result on this study, subsequent workovers and new wells have been completed in reservoirs which heretofore may have been considered depleted.
