Abstract
Differential Rates of Shoreline Advance and Retreat at Coastal Barriers of Chatham and Liberty Counties, Georgia
G. F. Oertel, C. F. Chamberlain (1)
ABSTRACT
A study of a 78-year history of shoreline positions in Chatham and Liberty Counties, Georgia, reveals complicated erosional-depositional patterns. Tybee and Little Tybee Islands underwent net shoreline retreats of 0.3 and 0.7 m/yr, respectively. Net shoreline advances of 2.8 and 2.9 m were calculated at Wassaw and Ossabaw Island while St. Catherines Island had a net shoreline retreat of 4.0 m/yr. These shorelines did not retreat in a straight line. Portions of shoreline retreated during different time periods as they swung back and forth across nodal points. Differential rates of erosion and accretion were a common occurrence along this section of coast.
