Paleostructural Mapping in Bathyal Environments

Ralph Biel (1), Glenn H. Buck (1)

ABSTRACT

In sedimentary basins where the time of structural growth and its relation to sedimentation are critical for hydrocarbon entrapment, paleobathymetric data should be included in structural mapping programs. Paleostructure maps combine isopachous and paleobathymetric values which lead to significantly different structural interpretations than using conventional structure maps. They are used to: (1) illustrate structural growth; (2) determine migration of structural closure; (3) outline hydrocarbon paleo-drainage areas; and (4) provide clues to the migration and entrapment of hydrocarbons.

Paleostructural mapping is most applicable in bathyal environments (down slope from the continental shelf) with water depths in excess of 600 ft., on steep depositional slopes and where the supply and distribution of sediments are variable.

An example showing an actual case of paleostructural mapping is illustrated by a series of structure maps, isopachs, and paleostructure maps from the South Louisiana Miocene subsurface.
