Abstract
The Northern Gulf of Mexico as an Anomalous Passive Margin
William W. Hay (1,2), James F. Behensky Jr. (1)
ABSTRACT
Analysis of sedimentation of the Gulf Coast and Atlantic margins of North America shows significant differences between the two passive margins. The Gulf Coast contains about 70 times as much salt and almost 10 times as much sediment per km of length as the Atlantic margin. Massive Late Cenezoic sedimentation on the Gulf Coast has interacted with the unusual volume of salt to produce a uniquely deformed passive margin.
