Miocene Production in Southwest Alabama

ABSTRACT

The first commercial Miocene production in Alabama was discovered in early 1979 by Amoco Production Company. The #2 Roy Amos 32-12 was completed through 13 3/8 inch casing at 1664 feet flowing 950 mcfd on a 20/64 inch choke with 380 pounds FTP. Since then ten additional Miocene fields have been discovered from two different Miocene sands, the Amos and the Meyer. Completed well costs are approximately $150,000. Flow rates are usually in excess of 1 mmcfd. Porosities range from 25-38%. Permeabilities range from a few millidarcies to greater than 2500 millidarcies. Average reserves are in excess of 1 BCF per well. The depositional environment is postulated to be a floodplain point bar system. Shale compaction forms most of the structural relief. Wells are completed naturally using a gravel pack. The primary method of exploration is through stratigraphic interpretation of seismic. The productive gas sands appear on seismic data as an amplitude anomaly or "bright spot."
