Abstract: Quantitative Chemical Stratigraphy of Offshore Exploration Wells of the Flexure Trend: Spectral Coherency Analysis

ABSTRACT
Isotope chronostratigraphy provides an improved basis for high resolution stratigraphic correlation of Plio-Pleistocene exploration wells but the method has inherent limitations due to the non-unique and quasi-periodic nature of the 18O and 13C signals. In this paper we present a quantitative basis for using isotope chronostratigraphy records, as well as other forms of chemical stratigraphy for use in the Flexure Trend (i.e., carbonate and fine-fraction chemical stratigraphies). The quantitative basis of chemical stratigraphy is demonstrated using matched filtering of isotope chronostratigraphy records to identify the noise levels in the records and enhance the signal to noise ratio. Cross power spectral analysis and spectral coherency of the noiseless records are then used to increase the robustness of high resolution stratigraphic correlations, thereby improving the quality of depositional models for Flexure Trend wells from Green Canyon, Ewing Banks and South Timbalier blocks.
