Timing of Faults and Extension Fractures in the Sierra Madre Oriental, Northeastern Mexico

Hooker, John N., Marrett, Randall A., and Laubach, Stephen E.

ABSTRACT

Specifying timing of faults and extension fractures can be problematic, and it is tempting to assume that they are associated with the most intense deformation, particularly in a fold-thrust belt. Yet fractures may develop prior to folding or during post-tectonic exhumation. The Cretaceous carbonate systems of the Sierra Madre Oriental in northeastern Mexico provide examples of faults and fractures associated with isoclinal folds. Some of these structures are genetically related to folding, but many faults and fractures can be shown to predate folding.
