EXTENDED ABSTRACT: Seismic Facies Mapping on the Major Reservoir Producer (S10) in the Troika Field

Kirkova-Pourciau, Julitta T.1 and Hill, William A.1

ABSTRACT

The very prolific Gulf of Mexico Troika S10 turbidite reservoir has outperformed the original reservoir model. Seismic facies mapping was undertaken in an attempt to better understand the complexity of the reservoir and the implications for reservoir performance, reserve calculations and production characteristics. This mapping was done on a full stack color inverted data set where the zero crossing represents the bed boundary. Waveform shape pattern recognition was used to separate the S10 reservoir into distinct sandstone bodies. These bodies show various degrees of connectivity and exhibit general channel morphologies. Using spectral decomposition as a geophysical attribute has confirmed the channel interpretation and depositional timing.

The seismic facies within the reservoir revealed stratigraphic baffles. The results of the mapping were incorporated in a 3 dimensional reservoir model from which a very good history match was achieved with minimal adjustments to the static reservoir description.

This work shows that the prolific Troika S10 reservoir that once was considered a simplistic reservoir is in fact more complex than originally thought. The facies mapping illustrated these complexities and aided in the economic development of the field. The results of the study provide a better description of the reservoir and a more accurate assessment of reserves yet to be produced.
