Fernando Velasco-Tapia, Francisco Medina-Barrera

Abstract

On December 1990, a two-year Master of Science in Geological Sciences degree was established in the Facultad de Ciencias de la Tierra, Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico The program offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary graduate training in four specific fields of Earth Sciences: Stratigraphy–Paleontology, Geological Engineering–Hydrogeology, Geodynamics, and Applied Geophysics. The program scheme includes basic and area of specialty courses, seminars, and a M.Sc. thesis. On August 1993, the program was incorporated in the Graduate National Program (GNP) by Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACyT). A three-year Doctor of Philosophy in Geosciences degree has been offered since March 2002. It is intended to develop independent research abilities for those students who have the talent and motivation for original and creative work in an geoscience specific field. Each aspirant must pass three distinct evaluations: (a) preliminary examination: the candidate must present to the academic committee a description of proposed dissertation research; (b) pre-doctoral examination: student must demonstrate by the fourth semester, by means of written and oral examination, proficiency in general geology, and their area of specialty; and (c) final examination: the Ph.D. degree is awarded when the candidate has demonstrated expertise in his/her research area made evident through a publishable contribution of original research and a successful dissertation written and oral defense. On August 2005, the program was also included in GNP catalogue.
