Abstract
Initiation of a New Geophysics Degree Program in South Texas
Abstract
In the fall of 2017, the first course was taught for a new geophysics degree program at Texas A&M University–Kingsville (TAMUK). Based on several years of discussions with local petroleum-based companies, the department designed a geologically-based geophysics curriculum that would support not only the petroleum industry, but also the mining and environmental industries, and governmental agencies. As the university serves an underrepresented student population, the degree program was designed to place students directly into employment positions. This program, like its parent geology degree, is designed to extensively use field observations to assist in classroom learning.
