Abstract
Extended Abstract: Stratigraphic Partitioning and Reservoir Attributes of the Upper Devonian to Lower Mississippian Exshaw Formation, Alberta, Canada
Abstract
During the Late Devonian and Early Mississippian across much of North America, epeiric seaways were characterized by variably anoxic to euxinic conditions and the deposition of finely laminated black shale. One such black shale, the Exshaw Formation, is a regionally extensive, organic-matter enriched (up to 35% total organic carbon), thin (<20 m) black shale within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) and is equivalent with the renowned Bakken Formation shale reservoir of the northern U.S. Great Plains. The research presented here on the Exshaw Formation summarizes a regional stratigraphic framework across the central and southern Alberta study area that includes well log predictions of depositional facies, organic richness, and dominant mineralogy. Results are based upon the detailed description and analysis of 18 cored wells and associated well logs, as well as logs from 436 additional wells. Figures 1-4 provided additional illustrative information.
