ABSTRACT

3-D seismic surveys are playing an important role in revitalizing old fields for Texaco in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast. Texaco believes they are a major contributing factor in identifying drillable locations, as well as reducing drilling risks. The Lafitte 3-D survey was the first significant Texaco proprietary 3-D survey to be acquired over an onshore Louisiana property. The 35 sq. mi. survey, which began in 1990, was acquired to increase the field's production while contributing to an overall balanced drilling portfolio for the Region. During data acquisition and processing, a team of geoscientists and engineers integrated paleontological, petrophysical, production and geological data into a useable database that was used to drill 12 wells; 9 successful and 3 unsuccessful. Table 1, highlights the 100% development and 50% on-structure wildcat successes.

The Rigolets CFC #171 and the Lafitte LL&E #197 wells are discussed in some detail. Other successes, include the first horizontal well drilled in the field (through a meandering channel sand) and wells drilled in mis/unpicked fault blocks. The Lafitte 3-D survey was an instrumental part of the successful drilling program attained in Lafitte Field between 1992-96. The following examples reflect some of the ways the Lafitte 3-D was utilized to develop a portfolio of drilling successes.
