Eggshell Fragments from the Jurassic Morrison Formation of Colorado

Karl F. Hirsch, Robert G. Young, Harley J. Armstrong

Abstract

Jurassic eggshells are reported here for the first time. They are from three localities in the Morrison Formation of Colorado; 1) Callison Quarry of the Fruita Paleontological Area in western Colorado; 2) Garden Park near Canon City, in south central Colorado; and 3) Young Locality in Delta County, in west central Colorado.

Both avian-like and chelonian-like eggshell structure can be distinguished from the Fruita Paleontological Area. Abundant shell fragments of avian-like structure have been found at the Young Locality. The single eggshell fragment from the Garden Park area is also of avian-like structure. We cannot, at this time, determine whether these eggshells are dinosaurian, or whether they are actually chelonian or avian.
