The Long Walk Quarry and Tracksite: Unveiling the Mysterious Early Cretaceous of the Dinosaur Triangle Region

Frank L. DeCourten

Abstract

Despite the wealth of information on dinosaurs derived from the study of localities within the Dinosaur Triangle region, little is known about the Early Cretaceous fauna and paleoenvironments of the region. The recently developed Long Walk Quarry in Emery County, Utah, is the largest concentration of dinosaur remains in the Albian-Aptian Cedar Mountain Formation of the Colorado Plateau province. The discovery of Pleurocoelus, a small sauropod, and Acrocanthosaurus (?), a medium-sized theropod, from this site are the first known occurrences of these taxa in the region. The Long Walk Quarry is likely to become the single most important Early Cretaceous locality in the Dinosaur Triangle. Research underway by the Utah Museum of Natural History will help resolve many uncertainties concerning the local Early Cretaceous “gap” in the years to come.
