Geological Evolution of South China Sea Area; Tentative Reconstruction from Borderland Geology and Well Data

M. Pupilli

Abstract

The geological history of the South China Sea area has been tentatively reconstructed in the light of Plate Tectonic concepts.

The collision of oceanic plates and continental margins led to the continental accretion and subsequent emergence of a wide continent, extending over the actual South China Sea area.

It is proposed that arc-trench systems have been active in the region since Paleozoic times, and their various locations and movements are the basis of the paleogeographic reconstruction and tectonic history herein developed.
