Injection Water Treating

C. C. McCune

Abstract

Water injection projects for purposes of pressure maintenance, reservoir waterflooding, or simply for waste disposal are often plagued by injectivity problems. To prevent such problems, the relationships between the injection water and reservoir rock must be examined to determine the specific water quality requirements. Sources of suspended solids such as bacteria and corrosion products, formation fines, and scale must be determined. Harmful chemical interactions between the water and the formation mineralogy need to be identified. Chemical treatment, bacteria and corrosion control filtration, and other methods are then required to obtain adequate water quality. On-site testing often must be utilized to define these requirements.
