Application of Centrifugal Compressors for High Pressure Gas Cycling, Arun Field

Cathal Ahern

Abstract

Giant Arun Field in Aceh Province of North Sumatra, Indonesia is currently producing in excess of 1200 MMSCFD gas. Ultimately, facilities will be expanded to 2400 MMSCFD capacity for gas deliveries to Pertamina's P.T. Arun LNG Plant, gas cycling facilities and field fuel gas systems. Compressor facilities have been installed for injecting gas into the Arun reef in order to increase early condensate and ultimate condensate recovery. Early installation of the compressor facilities during project development allowed commencement of condensate production almost a year in advance of the LNG Plant completion.

Compressor facilities consist of three injection plants, each containing 27,950 HP site rated two shaft gas fired turbines driving tandem barrel case centrifugal compressor. Each plant is designed to compress 200 MMSCFD gas from 1100 psig to injection pressure of 7100 psig. High efficiency performance indicates a successful application of centrifugal compressors to meet the requirements of this high pressure gas technology.

This paper describes the gas compression facilities and related commissioning, operation and maintenance experience.
