Stratigraphic Delineation of the Baong Sandstone by High Resolution Acoustic Inversion in the North Sumatra Basin

L. R. Weathers, R. B. Helm

Abstract

The feasibility of using seismic acoustic impedance to resolve thin sandstones was tested using marine data not specifically intended for high resolution applications.

Essential steps were 1) Careful choice of data processing parameters to obtain a seismic record section with maximum resolution 2) Petrophysical editing of well logs 3) Extraction of an accurate wavelet from seismic data by means of well log acoustic data 4) Inversion of seismic reflectivity traces into seismic acoustic impedance traces using the extracted wavelet 5) Calibration of seismically-derived acoustic impedance to lithostratigraphy at wells 6) Extrapolation of lithology and stratigraphy away from well ties.

Thin layers within the Baong sandstone unit were recognized but interpretation of lithology from the seismic data was complicated by the fact that in well data, variations within sandstones themselves were sometimes larger than the contrast between sandstone and shale.
