The Contribution of Simple Seismic Modeling for Reef Distribution Mapping

Soetomo J.A., Bambang Santoso

Abstract

Seismic reflections are the best tool to map the distribution of reefs. This method is commonly used by oil companies.

Reef build up has certain seismic characteristics which are used to detect the build up.

An anomalous appearance on a seismic section could be interpreted differently, such as carbonate build up (reef), diapir, mound, or intrusion.

Quality of seismic data could cause misinterpretation.

Thorough inspection of the seismic characteristics of the anomalies leads us into the most likely geological interpretation of the build up.

Seismic modeling is oftenly a good tool to define the build up above. In this paper seismic modeling for the carbonate build up (reef) is discussed.
