Dynamic Killing Method as Applied to Well PSJ–A

Kersam Sumanta, Bambang Nugroho

Abstract

The exploratory well PSJ-A was drilled on the Pasirjadi Structure, West Java, by Pertamina Unit EP-III. The blowout occured when drilling reached 540 meters, caught fire, and the rig totally destroyed within 10 minutes.

Dynamic killing was considered as the safest method to control the blowout. Two relief wells were drilled 300 meters away from the problem well.

Killing operation was started by injecting water through the relief well No. 1. First communication was obtained after 18 minutes and the fire went out 37 minutes later, after the injection of 4,508 barrels of water. The well stopped blowing in less than 24 hours since the start of killing operations.

All of the design and implementation of the killing procedures were carried out by Pertamina's own personel.
