Abstract
PDC Bits and Steerable Downhole Mud Motors Improve Drilling Performance, East Kalimantan
Abstract
A study of drilling performance in Unocal Indonesia's Attaka Field has resulted in a comparison of conventional drilling methods with newer drilling technology, introduced to the Attaka Field in 1984. The system consists of low toxic oil base mud (OBM), a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit, a measurement while drilling (MWD) tool and, in many cases, a steerable downhole positive displacement mud motor. Since the introduction of the modern drilling techniques, problems with wellbore instability have been eliminated, bit life and rate of penetration have improved, and drilling time and costs have been reduced.
