Rotary Drilling of a Horizontal Well, West Java Sea

Abstract

The Rama I-7 well is the first horizontal producing well drilled in Indonesia. The well was completed in April 1985, and is located in Rama Field, Pertamina/IIAPCO Southeast Sumatra Contract area.

This paper presents the experience acquired in drilling a horizontal well using conventional rotary drilling rig and drilling assemblies. The aspects reviewed and discussed are drilling parameters, drilling assemblies, mud systems, the difficulties encountered during the operation and other operating characteristics using tools such as Measurement While Drilling (MWD), logging and perforating in a horizontal well.
