Petroleum Exploration with BP's Airborne Laser Fluorosensor

R. H. Clarke, A. I. Grant, M. T. Macpherson, D. G. Stevens, M. Stevenson

Abstract

Petroleum seeps naturally from accumulations in most petroleum provinces. The strong fluorescence of aromatics in seep oil may be used to detect such seepage where it has produced slicks or emulsions at or near the sea surface. BP has constructed an Airborne Laser Fluorosensor to map the occurrence of natural seep oil and use it to identify areas where mobile petroleum occurs in the subsurface. The use of this device will be illustrated by experimental results during the presentation of this paper.
