Combined P and S Waves Survey for Hydrocarbon Exploration

Basuki Puspoputro

Abstract

An experimental survey utilizing combined P- and S-waves had been held over four structures in the North-west Java Basin Indonesia. The purpose of the survey was to study the relations between Vp/Vs or gamma ratio and the occurence of hydrocarbons. Seismic-well correlations enabled calculations of the gamma ratio of shales, limestones, and variations within both rocks. The gamma ratio superimposed on P-wave sections showed that the vertical and lateral development of the reservoir rock and the presence of gas may possibly be defined depending on the thickness of the reservoir and the gamma ratio contrast between the reservoir and the adjacent rocks. This was demonstrated by the reservoirs of four structures under study. Several suggestions are discussed so as to improve this type of investigation. Seismic wave propagation phenomena and development of techniques in seismic data acquisition, processing, and interpretation are covered by this study.
