Abstract
Frontier Exploration in the Lengguru Foldbelt Irian Jaya, Indonesia
Abstract
Recent discoveries in the Papuan Foldbelt provide the stimulus to extensively explore its western extension in Irian Jaya, the Lengguru Foldbelt. Although there have been two wells drilled, exploration in the Lengguru Foldbelt is still at a frontier stage; none of the wells tested the validity of the structural play nor adequately penetrated the potential Mesozoic sandstone reservoir.
The potential for large hydrocarbon discoveries is suggested by the occurrence of oil and gas seeps and large surface anticlines. Analogies with similar structures in the productive Papuan Foldbelt demonstrate the high potential of this high risk region.
Much of the area is covered by karst limestone, which is limiting the use of seismic techniques. Therefore, exploration is based on SAR imagery, surface geology, gravity and magnetics.
