Geothermal Prospects in Sumatera

Surachman Suari, Amir Fauzi

Abstract

Sumatera, the third biggest island in Indonesia, is rich in natural resources, including geothermal energy. Inventory prospecting has provided an estimated geothermal resource potential of about 4885 MW. The prospects are mostly located along the western part of the island, spreading from Aceh province in the North to Lampung province in the South. The Great Sumatera Fault probably controls the distribution of geothermal systems in Sumatera.

This paper describes the recent inventory results of the geothermal prospects in Sumatera. Development status and prospect ranking on the basis of geoscientific data is also presented.
