Successful Slim Hole Drilling by Asamera - South Sumatra

Alfred Almendingen, Achmad Boytizen, Memet Rachmat, J. A. Thomson, Ben Seay

Abstract

In the search for oil and gas, the industry is being forced to explore in more and more remote and difficult to access areas. To use large conventional oil field equipment in these areas has proven to be both difficult and expensive. A viable alternative to this is the use of Slim hole Drilling equipment and techniques combined with total project services supplied in a Semi-Turnkey Package. This approach was successfully used by Asamera in a five well exploration drilling project in the Corridor Block in South Sumatra. This Semi-Turnkey Package was put together by PT. Mintekindo Utama Inti using a Longyear HM 55 Slim Hole Heli rig, a NUH Bell 205 helicopter, and construction services and expertise from PT. Graha Sarana Buana Jaya. One of the many cost saving advantages of this approach is that Asamera only has one tender package to prepare and only one contractor to deal with for the duration of the work.

During the Asamera program a total of five wells were drilled in remote-swamp areas, the deepest of which was 1186 m. Standard rotary drilling methods were used to drill to the intermediate casing point which was approximately 50% of the total depth. From this point onward the hole was fully cored. The program was completed on time and within budget.
