The Stratigraphy and Sedimentology of West Timor, Indonesia

Abstract

Over 1300 kilometers of reconnaissance and detailed geological traverses were made of Permian to Neogene age outcrops on the island of Timor, Eastern Indonesia as part of Amoseas Indonesia and Pertamina-BPPKA's interest in the petroleum assessment of the Soe PSC, West Timor. The program was integrated with results from biostratigraphic, petrographic and geochemical laboratory analysis, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images, and air photos. Investigation revealed a significantly more coherent regional stratigraphic picture than has been previously reported in literature.

Exposures were described that consist of; 1) Permian to Neogene sediments that reflect the tectonic history of Gondwana and the Northwest Australian margin, 2) Cretaceous through Neogene sediments believed to represent an overthrusted volcanic and forearc basin and 3) a synorogenic Plio-Pleistocene deposit that reflects rapid collision-related uplift.

Stratigraphic results contributed to our initial assessment of source, reservoir, and sealing potential on Timor. Reconstructions of the region's complex tectonic history facilitated prediction of structural trapping styles. Ideas will be tested and continually modified by the incorporation of drilling results from planned exploration programs in Timor and throughout Eastern Indonesia.
